The Tidy Towns Committee in Tullow asked the Parade Committee to consider using "Bee Happy" as the theme of the 2019 parade and businesses in the town have embraced the idea.

Cllr Will Paton said: "As chairman of the Tidy Towns Committee I am delighted the Parade Committee took up the suggestion.

"You can see some really wonderful interpretations of the theme in the windows. We asked for this theme to be considered as the Tidy Towns Committee is going to enter into the Pollinator Awards in the National Tidy Towns Competition 2019.

"The theme will help educate the public to the important part that insects and honey bees in particular play in pollinating our trees, fruit and vegetables."

He added: "Without bees there would be no fruit and vegetables. During the next few three Irish Wildflower areas at Pairc Mhuire, Tullow Town Park and the entrance to Graigowan/Gortnahowan will begin to grow and offer a food source to the bees.

"We also envisage planting two new colourful areas in the town park for bees and if everything goes really well we could have a bee farm in Tullow (not real bees) but a visual reminder to people just how important bees are to our community."
