A HILARIOUS news article about a tale of illicit after-hours drinking in a country pub has resurfaced online.

Barrister Elaine Byrne shared the undated news clipping of an article detailing the time her grandmother, Jane Byrne, was before the courts over after-hours drinking in her family pub.

"The hilarious day my grandmother (the licensee) was cross-examined in court over after-hours (10.30pm!!) drinking in our pub the Sunday before Lent", her post on X (formerly known as Twitter) said, shared on Tuesday, December 26.

"My parents were behind the counter. This must be at least 30 years old."

The article details evidence given by gardaí that when they entered the premise belonging to Jane Byrne in Tullow, county Carlow, after hours on Sunday February 25, two men were discovered hiding in the ladies bathroom and it was clear that a number of customers had escaped out the window of the gents.

Jane Byrne and her son, Elaine's father John, gave evidence that they were in fact trying to clear the premises when gardaí arrived, which led to the judge striking out charges of "aiding and abetting", while handing down a mandatory fine of £5 to Mrs Byrne.

The clipping shared by Elaine has no date, but one sleuth in the comments has pointed out that February 25 was a Sunday in 1990 and 1979, giving two possibilities of when the event occurred.
