Hundreds in hospital with Covid-19 amid New Year spike in cases

Latest figures confirm HSE warnings
Over 300 people are in Irish hospitals with Covid-19, according to the latest figures.
Since this Tuesday morning, 364 people were recorded as being in hospital with confirmed cases of Covid-19.
There are 15 people in ICU with the viral respiratory disease. These figures come after warnings made by the HSE that a spike in cases is to be expected this time in January.
According to national statistics, provided by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) and the HSE, there was a positive rate of 12.1% in those who took Covid-19 tests in the last week, some 7,200 people.
Known to spike this time of year and this week in January, HSE CEO Bernard Gloster warned that “we are going to hit the height of the flu into this week” which figures seemed to have since confirmed.
“That will tail on into the following week, so we are expecting significant pressure on the system,” Mr Gloster said. He also urged people to consider vaccination against Covid-19 and influenza.
