Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee broke the news of the refuge this morning on Twitter:
"Today marks an important first step in the work to establish a 10-unit Domestic Violence refuge in Carlow. A suitable site has been located in Carlow Town and Amber Women’s Refuge have now submitted their application to fund its construction."
"Well done to Amber Refuge and to the other agencies who are working hard to progress this project; including Carlow County Council, Housing Agency Ireland& Cuan the Domestic, Sexual and Gender Based Violence Agency. I look forward to work progressing quickly on this much needed refuge."
Speaking on the selection process in a Facebook video, TD Jennifer Murnane O'Connor said:
"Really good news today, Carlow will now have a women's refuge. The site has been located on the Old Monastery Dublin Road. It is going to be 10 units. It is working with Cuan, the department, Amber will be the lead agency but it has been all the different agencies in Carlow working together that got this over the line and I'm delighted to be part of that.
So, today now we have the building, it has been announced. It is great of course, but we need to get it open as soon as possible but Carlow will have a Women's Refuge very soon. We have the site. We have the building and it is really important that we get it up and running as soon as possible."
