One of Carlow's busiest streets is set to be trailed as a pedestrian street. The scheme is set to be trailed along Lower Tullow Street over the next 3 months.
The road will be closed with an aim to increase footfall and promote local business in the area.
The pilot of the scheme will be trailed on April: 3, 4, 10, 11, 31, May: 1, 7, and 8 and June 8 from 11am to 5.30pm each day. The road will be closed between its junction with the Potato Market and though to Dublin Street.
The council's director Pádraig O'Gorman: "the decision to pilot the pedestrianisation is part of our ongoing commitment to create a vibrant and welcoming town-centre environment for residents and visitors alike and to support current retailers and hospitality providers."
The hope with pedestrianisation thye can increase footfall and with the vehicle free-zone the council hopes to promote visitors to explore the area on the foot.
It is hoped that it will create an enhanced shopping experience, opportunity for outdoor seating for cafés, restaurants and other businesses that wish to utilise outdoor seating and create a vibrant, social atmosphere, and encourage people to spend more time in the area.
