Carlow to receive €938,444 in Local Improvement Scheme out of a €17.6 million allocation

County Carlow is set to receive €938,444 as part of the Local Improvement Scheme. This is apart of a €17.6 million funding for Munster and South Leinster. Carlow receives the lowest amount of this funding with the counties receiving the most at around €2.5 million each being Cork, Kerry and Tipperary. With neighbouring Kilkenny receiving an additional €366,455, bringing their allocation to €1,304,899 compared to County Carlow.

Fianna Fáil MEP Billy Kelleher has said that the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) funding announced today by the Government will be a major relief to thousands of homeowners and communities across the country.

Kelleher was commenting following the announcement of €17.6 million to local authorities in Munster and South Leinster by the Government for repairs and improvement works on non-public rural roads and laneways under the Local Improvement Scheme.

“This funding will be of vital importance to people living on roads and laneways not normally maintained or serviced by their local authority.

“As part of the scheme, farmers or landowners making use of the road or laneway make a contribution towards the cost of the works with the Local Authority making up the difference.

“This is an issue that has been brought up repeatedly with me when meeting with county councillors throughout Ireland South. It is a scheme that is both well understood and much needed by rural communities.

“Crucially, the Government has amended the criteria for inclusion in the scheme. From now on, only one herd number will be required per application. This will result in more families being eligible for funding under the scheme,” concluded Kelleher.
