St Mary's Academy CBS Carlow has received conditional planning permission for a huge number of works to take place at the local Carlow Town secondary school.
The planning permission was received by Carlow County Council on January the 11th 2024 and the decision was made on the 2nd of September 2024.
The list of works that the planning notice contains are as follows:
The phased construction consisting of, the felling and removal of the existing car park trees.
The demolition of the existing single storey derelict house and the temporary relocation of the existing 50 space car park off site to the rear of Byrnes funeral directors on Railway Road and the temporary relocation of the existing single storey Portacabin beside the existing Gym building.
The construction of the three storey school building of 8308 sqm gross internal area, consisting of general classrooms, locker areas, specialist classrooms, multi-purpose hall and associated fitness room, changing and storage facilities, a general purpose hall with an associated dining area and servery, library, a 4 class base Special Educational Needs (SEN) Unit and associated sensory garden, technology, construction studies and associated prep room, graphics, engineering, art, science and home economics classrooms, including ancillary stores, service areas, staff and administrative accommodation.
The proposed school will include the provision of Heat Pumps with PV panel installations located on the new school roof.
The provision of a new boundary wall, vehicular entrance and pedestrian access gate and associated set down area to the Old Dublin Road.
The demolition of the remaining 2 storey gym and main school buildings including the 2 single storey Portacabins and the construction of a new avenue, a new boundary wall, pedestrian entrance, and emergency vehicle access to Railway Road and 2 new ball courts.
58 car parking spaces are proposed including 3 new universal design parking spaces, 150 bicycle spaces, biodiverse water management and attenuation systems, hard, and soft landscaped areas, upgrading and refurbishment of existing boundaries, some new boundary walls, external store and ancillary site works.

"Having regard to the nature, extent and design of the proposed development, the location and character of the site and the existing established school use thereon, to the ‘Community/Educational’ zoning of the site in the Carlow County Development Plan 2022-2028, and to the pattern of existing development in the neighbouring area, it is considered that subject to compliance with the conditions attached, the proposed development would be acceptable in terms of form and layout, would not seriously injure the amenities of the area or of property in the vicinity, and would therefore be in accordance with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area."
