As speculation mounts about a snap general election, People Before Profit have announced that Cllr Adrienne Wallace will run as the candidate for Carlow/Kilkenny. Cllr Wallace is well known for her activism, particularly around housing and the campaign for a women’s refuge in Carlow and has served on Carlow Council since 2019.

Cllr Wallace said “I am excited to announce that I have been selected as the candidate for the up-coming general election. This will be my second time running in a general election having received 4,800 votes in 2020 which was more than double my vote in 2016. The electorate in Carlow/Kilkenny quite frankly cannot afford another term of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael. It’s time to end their 100-year rule. Another Ireland is possible, we just need the right political will to make it happen.”

She continued “There are record-breaking numbers of homelessness and the lack of services and school places for children with special needs is particularly acute here. Without the right political representation in Carlow and Kilkenny things will continue to get worse. The Green party have failed on their mandate to tackle climate change. Having missed the 2020 emission reductions targets, Ireland is now on course to miss the 2030 emission reduction targets by a substantial shortfall."

"PBP has a raft of eco-socialist policies that would create the system change we need, and we have the political will to deliver it. We will never enter into a coalition with Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil. We want to create a left government that can break the cycle of the two and a half party system.”

PBP Deputy Richard Boyd-Barrett added “PBP are particularly strong in Carlow and Kilkenny and Cllr Wallace is a well-known figure in activist circles across the constituency. Amongst other things she co-founded the Repeal the 8th groups, and has been extremely active in pushing Carlow council to tackle vacancy and dereliction. She also helped found the Carlow Irish Palestine Solidarity Campaign and supports the BDS movement. She has cut her teeth in the council chambers; she knows the issues affecting people and how to create change. I hope people will continue to support her in this election.”
