Carlow Councillor blasts Greencore Ltd's for 'neglect of iconic site' in Carlow

Sugar Factory Carlow

Carlow Councillor Adrienne Wallace has blasted Greencore Ltd over their continued neglect of the former Sugar factory site. The site owned by Greencore, has approximately 42 hectares in Carlow and the remainder in County Laois. After 80 years in production, Carlow sugar factory closed with a loss of 190 full-time jobs in 2005. The site is now derelict.

Cllr Wallace added “In 2024 Carlow MD passed my motion and agreed to write to Greencore Ltd to request a detailed update on the site. In turn Greencore agreed to meet Carlow MD councillors on site to discuss further development but since then Greencore have ignored repeated attempts to plan such a meeting.”

She continued “This is not acceptable behaviour from Greencore, they are blatantly continuing to neglect this iconic site in Carlow. The sugar factory holds a lot of memories for so many and is unique to Carlow’s rich history. We deserve better from Greencore. The site holds a lot of potential and I want to see it developed into a vibrant tourist attraction. Greencore must be held to account for their total inaction here, they have become a law onto themselves.”
