Carlow Council Building
Carlow County Council has passed a motion calling on the government to bring in strict, legally binding rules for wind turbines.
The motion was tabled by Cllr Daniel Pender with a cross party group of councillors. It was supported by a number of other councillors at the latest council meeting. At the moment, there are only guidelines in place for wind turbines, but they are not legally enforceable.
Cllr Pender said Ireland is falling behind other countries when it comes to protecting homeowners. “In Denmark, turbines can’t be built too close to houses, and if they are, the homeowner must be paid compensation. In Ireland, your home can lose value and there’s no way to claim for it. That’s shocking and it needs to be fixed,” he said.
He also mentioned a recent case in Wexford where three turbines were turned off after a court found they were affecting the people living nearby.
Similar motions were passed by other county councils on the same day, including Laois, Kildare, and Kilkenny, showing growing support for stronger turbine rules across the country.
