Another day, another mattress dumped at the side of the road!

The mattress thrown by the side of the R445

A reader sent us this photo of a dumped mattress on the side of a busy road on Tuesday morning.

The mattress was rolled up and thrown along the R445 between Kildare Town and the Curragh Racecourse.

The reader said: "Obviously this person wouldn't pay the €20 to dispose of a mattress legally and safely in a recycling centre."

The charge for disposing of a Single Mattress is €20 while the fee for a Double is €30 at Silliot Hill Recycling Centre & Civic Amenity in Kilcullen.

These charges seem to be discouraging people from complying with the Litter Act across Co Kildare.

Leaving or throwing litter in a public place is an offence that can be subject to an on-the-spot fine of €150.

Litter wardens or gardaí have the power to issue such on-the-spot fines.

If they go unpaid within a specified time frame and the case comes before the District Court, if found guilty, the defendant faces a maximum fine of €3,000.
