New book - 'Defying the Curse' tells the amazing story of a man's triumph over profound disability in Ireland of the 1800's. Irish Author Maria O'Rourke tells the story of Arthur Kavanagh - an extraordinary man - who defied not only his own challenges, but also an ancient curse which was placed on his family by a disgruntled tenant. In childhood he conquered the pastimes of his noble birth by hunting, shooting and fishing, while in adulthood he became an MP, sailing his own yacht across the Irish Sea and up the Thames to take his place in Parliament. He even managed to have a few illegitimate children as well as seven with his wife, Frances!

Arthur's mother, Harriet Kavanagh, an intrepid traveller, was determined that her son would live a normal life, but even she couldn't have foretold what this astonishing man would achieve. In fact, if this work of Historical Fiction were not based on the life of a real character, readers would find it difficult to believe what lies between the covers.

After a career in teaching spanning thirty years, Maria O’Rourke is now a dedicated writer, having completed a Masters in Creative Writing at the University of Limerick in Ireland. She draws on her own experiences in personal, work and family life to bring out what is universal in each individual experience. ‘Defying the Curse’ is a significant milestone for Maria and she is delighted to share her new work of historical fiction for people to enjoy.

Well known Irish author, Donal Ryan's testimonial on the cover describes the book as 'an amazing story, beautifully told, of resilience and fortitude.’ Joseph O'Connor also wrote, 'I have worked with Maria O'Rourke and greatly admire her writing and storytelling'.

Maria explained the significance of her first publication saying “I was a teenager when my father told me about the curse on the Kavanagh family and about Arthur's achievements. I could hardly believe that someone so amazing lived in our county and that his family still live behind the tall, limestone wall that dominates the village of Borris in County Carlow. I’ve loved creating my own spin on this extraordinary story and I hope people enjoy the thrilling journey of Arthur Kavanagh as much as I have”.

The book will have its first launch in Carlow Library on Wednesday, March 20th.

‘Defying the Curse’ will be available to purchase on Amazon.co.uk and mariaorourke.com as well as alanhannas.com and independent bookstores.
