Paul Mescal set to play lead role in second adaptation of Gladiator
Eagerly awaited fans have caught their first glimpse of Paul Mescal in the highly anticipated Gladiator II movie set to hit our screens later this year.
A sequel to the critically acclaimed Gladiator starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix that was released in 2000, Gladiator II will star Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan, Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal, to name a few.
Gladiator II picks up right were Galdiator ended, with Maynooth born Mescal playing the lead role as Lucius Verus, nephew to evil Emperor Commodus (played by Joaquin Phoenix in the first movie), who idolises Maximus (Russell Crowes) and is now ready to ender the violent and bloody arena himself.
Little is known about the second installment, but new images of Mescal wearing the battle armour worn by Russel Crowe in the 2000 movie have sent fans into a frenzy.

While some die hard fans aren't too happy that a sequel has been made, noting that the original Gladiator was "perfection", others had a different take.
