'I didn't want to go' - Jen Zamparelli reveals real reason she left her RTÉ 2FM show

Jennifer Zamparelli has revealed the real reason she left her RTÉ 2FM radio show.

The popular presenter announced she was leaving her morning show in May 2024 after five years, however she did not immediately address the reason for the move.

She is one of several stars who have left the radio station over the past two months in what has become known as a "mass exodus" at RTÉ, with the 2 Johnnies and Doireann Garrihy announcing their departure in June.

Garrihy's former co-presenter, Donncha O'Callaghan, has also announced his decision to leave.

In an interview with VIP Magazine, Zamparelli said, "At the heart of it, I didn’t want to go, I didn’t want to leave my show. And it was heartbreaking – it really was. But something had to give and unfortunately, that was it."

According to Zamparelli, her husband Lauterio - who is a stunt co-ordinator and performer - has been away working on a full-time project, leaving her alone to parent her children.

She said, "He’s very busy and this is his time to fly – I needed more time off this summer and RTÉ just couldn’t give me that.

"But, look, I get it, they need to run a radio station."

Up-and-comer Laura Fox - who has taken over Zamparelli's slot - had covered for her before during absences, most recently when Zamparell's father was unwell.

Zamparelli began her career at RTÉ on Republic of Telly and catapulted to fame with the instant success of Bridget and Eamon, a sitcom about an odd couple living in 1980s Ireland.

She has also presented Dancing with the Stars and co-hosted a parenting podcast in 2023 with RTÉ star, Lottie Ryan.

According to the Irish Independent, Zamparelli is now seeking a new flexible job so she can spend more time with her children.

She has also reportedly started writing a comedy series.

RTÉ this week announced it is seeking applications from aspiring presenters (both in-house and amateur), with more than 200 people applying so far.

It is believed the broadcaster will set up a panel of shortlisted candidates for future vacancies.
