Carlow Councillor provides update on closer of Toughers that houses almost 150 people

Cllr Andrea Dalton have provided the latest news on the situation with the closure of Toughers
Carlow County Councillor, Andrea Dalton has provided updates on the situation at Toughers Carlow. The former restaurant which was being used to accommodate 150 Ukrainian men, women, and children was announced to be shut down due to fire safety concerns by the Department of Integration.
The date set for the closure was to be the 1st of January 2025, which has caused some concern with the short notice, especially over the Christmas period.
Cllr Dalton has announced on her social media account that an extension has been secured in the contract and they will have till the end of January instead of the 1st as previously announced.
She mentions special thanks to Chief Executive of Carlow County Council, Coilin O'Reily, the Fire Service and Deputy Jennifer Murnane O' Connor TD.
From the Facebook post:
"Following an inspection by the Local Authority fire officer, it was established that an extension of the contract to the end of January 2025 will be possible, if the provider fulfils certain conditions to ensure the safety of the people on the site. The Provider has agreed to these conditions, and the relocation of the people at this accommodation will be paused until a date in January. Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection are free to make their own private arrangements for accommodation in the area, either through the pledge or Offer a Home scheme, or by renting privately if they wish to do so. Information regarding these options has been given to the people in Toughers accommodation. The Department’s Relocations team will be in contact in January to provide details of the moving date and new state contracted accommodation that will be provided to those who still need it at the end of January. The Department acknowledges the disruption that these moves can cause, however we have always been clear that the accommodation provided is temporary and moves are necessary."
