Nature-based Solutions address societal challenges by protecting, sustainably managing, and restoring natural and modified ecosystems, benefiting both people and nature. They target critical issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and human health, contributing to sustainable development.

Raingardens play a crucial role in Nature-based Solutions, capable of reducing surface water runoff, slowing water flow, keeping water out of the sewer system, purifying water, and significantly boosting local biodiversity through the inclusion of plants. The raingardens constructed in Carlow Town are the first to be retrofitted in an urban streetscape in Ireland. The innovative raingarden project, a collaborative effort between Carlow County Council and the Local Authority Waters Programme, was completed in March 2024. The raingardens will successfully capture and infiltrate surface water, reducing pressure on downstream sewers and local watercourses like the River Barrow.

The project will also increase understanding and awareness of the benefits of retrofit nature-based solutions among community members and partners. Carlow Town’s improvement works, highlighted by the innovative raingarden project, position it as a strong contender in the Entente Florale competition. The entry for the President’s Prize underscores the town’s commitment to sustainability, community involvement, and the beautification of public spaces, setting a benchmark for future urban ecological initiatives.
