South East Technological University (SETU) has launched a new fully online series of courses to give professionals a greater understanding of the far-reaching impact of 3D printing.

3D printing is the process of constructing an object layer by layer and is also known as additive manufacturing.

The unique on-demand programme of minor awards allows participants to obtain certificates in the modules that are of most interest and relevance to their career or business. Expressions of interest are now being taken for the first module, 'Introduction to Additive Manufacturing', which begins in March.

The certificates are fully flexible, self-paced and are tailored to suit the diverse needs and busy schedules of industry professionals, managers, and engineers. Each module takes approximately 12 weeks to complete and is worth 10 credits.

The stand-alone modules form part of the Level 7 Bachelor of Science in Additive Manufacturing which first launched in 2022. The degree course will soon be taking applications for the third cohort of students. It is part of the AMASE (Additive Manufacturing Advancing the South East) project and is funded by the Higher Education Authority's HCI Pillar 3, a government initiative dedicated to enhancing collaboration between higher education and enterprise, with a specific focus on innovative teaching and learning practices.

Programme Leader, David Alarco said, 'This new certificate course reflects our commitment to fostering innovation and addressing the evolving needs of industries. Additive Manufacturing is a game-changer, and our programme aims to provide professionals with the knowledge and skills required to navigate this dynamic landscape. 3D printing is being widely used across industry, in particular aerospace, automotive and healthcare, because of its reliability, speed and the cost benefits. Our degree course is the first of its kind in Ireland and has proved to be very successful. The certificates are an opportunity for people who would like to know more about the area and how it can work for their business but who don’t want to commit to a full degree. Others may wish to pick one or two modules that are most relevant to them. Because it’s online and self-paced it means that anyone in Ireland or across the world can complete it in their own time.'

James Redmond is among the first cohort of students to graduate with a degree in Additive Manufacturing from SETU, he said, 'The additive manufacturing industry is growing rapidly and will sit alongside a lot of other manufacturing processes. The course was an opportunity for me to further my career and has opened a lot of doors for me. I would recommend it to anyone thinking about getting into the manufacturing or engineering sectors.'

Vincent Murphy, who is also a recent graduate from the degree course, added, 'In the next 10 years, 3D printing is going to be one of the biggest and fastest-changing technologies of our time. The course gave me a good understanding of different markets and ways of approaching them. It also gave me insights into the whole industry, new skills and talents that have been beneficial to me personally.'

Participants on the certificate course can expect a curriculum led by expert lecturers, providing insights into the latest trends and technologies in Additive Manufacturing. The programme will also facilitate networking opportunities, ensuring a rich and collaborative learning experience. For more information visit www.amase.ie or click here to apply.
