Independent Councillor Walter Lacey will not run in this year's Local Election after 30 years of public service to the people of Carlow.
Cllr Lacey was first co-opted to Carlow Town Council in 1989 and was elected in 1991 and he has served the people of Carlow since.
In making his announcement at Monday's meeting in the Council Chamber, Cllr Lacey said he had arrived at the decision not to run after much discussion with his family and supporters.
He said: "I feel it's the right time. I served for 30 years and thoroughly enjoyed my time."
Cllr Lacey thanked his wife, Bernadette, who was present in the Chamber and he also thanked his daughter Rachel, for their support over his 30 years as a local representative in Carlow.
Members of Carlow County Council were shocked by the announcement and paid tribute to Cllr Lacey for his service to the community.
Cllr Will Paton said: "My Council colleague (and friend) Cllr Walter Lacey has just announced his retirement from politics at the end of the current term. He will not contest the Local Government Elections in May 2019.
"Walter has served Carlow Town and County with distinction and I wish Walter and Bernie every joy and happiness in his retirement. A job well done Walter."
