'A legend of the town' - Carlow community heartbroken by loss of beloved shopkeeper

RIP: Rose Kavanagh (née Brereton)

Tributes have poured in following the passing of Rose Kavanagh (née Brereton) of Bagenalstown, County Carlow and formerly of Bracknagh, County Offaly.

Rose passed away peacefully on Saturday, 26 July at The Beacon Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Her RIP.ie notice reads: "Predeceased by her beloved husband Michael and son Michael, Rose will be deeply missed by her children Jim, Mary, Paul, John, and Sandra, her daughter-in-law Monica, sons-in-law Michael and Nick, Paul’s partner, Alli, and her grandchildren Eve, Shona, Rachel, Paul, Conor, Maeve, and Rose.

"Rose will also be greatly missed by Ruth, her siblings, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours, customers, friends and all who knew her."

The community of Bagenalstown has been left heartbroken by Rose's death as she served as a shopowner for many years on the town's High Street. Many people have left touching tributes online and messages of condolences for Rose's family since her passing.

Among the countless tributes, one person wrote: "Rose was one of Bagenalstown’s true ladies, always had a word for everyone and always with a smile on her face. She will be missed around Bagenalstown."

Another echoed this, saying: "The community of Bagenalstown will be at a loss without her kind face in her shop, what a lovely kind and gentle lady."

Someone else shared: "A lovely lady who always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she will be sadly missed by all. May her gentle soul rest in peace."

All of the kind words shared about Rose describe her as a "pillar of the community" and, most of all, an "absolute lady."

Rose will be reposing at Somers Funeral Home in Bagenalstown on Tuesday afternoon from 2pm to 8pm, with Funeral Prayers at 7pm. Requiem Mass will take place on Wednesday morning at 11am in St. Andrew's Church in Bagenalstown. Burial will follow afterwards in the Cemetery of the Assumption.
