Carlow club stalwart set to be honoured on national stage at Volunteers in Sport Awards

A Carlow man is set to be honoured on the national stage later this month after being named the county’s recipient of the 2025 Volunteers in Sport Award.

Simon Racklyeft of Carlow Town Hurling and Camogie Club will be recognised at a national ceremony in Dublin on Thursday, February 26, alongside volunteers from every county in Ireland.

The Federation of Irish Sport said Simon “embodies dedication, passion, and service”, describing him as “an exceptional and invaluable volunteer” within the Carlow club.

The organisation said Simon has “transformed the club’s finances, secured vital environmental grants, and driven major sustainability upgrades”, while also giving his time to coaching Under-12 camogie players.

His work with young players was also highlighted, with the Federation noting that his “calm, encouraging nature inspires young girls to thrive in sport” and that he “recognises the importance of providing meaningful opportunities for the participation of young girls in sport in our community”.

The awards, supported by Sport Ireland and the national network of Local Sports Partnerships, will see 36 volunteers honoured from across Ireland this year.

Speaking about the importance of the awards, Mary O’Connor, CEO of the Federation of Irish Sport, said: “The Federation of Irish Sport is delighted to honour the extraordinary volunteers who dedicate their time, passion, and energy to supporting sport and physical activity across Ireland.

“Their commitment not only enriches Irish sport but also strengthens communities nationwide.”

Sport Ireland CEO Dr Úna May added: “Volunteers are the driving force behind sport in Ireland. Their contribution helps sustain clubs and communities.

“But of course, volunteers do far more than just support sport; they strengthen communities, foster belonging and make participation possible.”

The Volunteers in Sport Awards will take place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown, with Minister of State for Sport and Postal Policy Charlie McConalogue TD set to address the ceremony.
