Clamping epidemic in Carlow over the weekend
Almost €200,000 was raised from clamping of motorists at railway stations in Ireland last year, figures released by Irish Rail have shown, but train stations in Carlow had relatively low fines imposed.
A total of €3,600.00 was paid at Carlow Train Station, with 98 cars clamped there in 2022.
Bagenalstown Train Station had €1,680.00 in clamping charges imposed on drivers. A total of 24 cars were clamped there last year.
So far in 2023, parking motorists have been hit with clamping charges of €1,320.00 at Carlow Train Station.
Latest national figures show that €192,960.00 was raised in 2022 through clamping of cars at rail stations across the country.
The information was released to Sean Sherlock TD after a parliamentary question by him.
In a written response, Irish Rail CEO Jim Meade said: "The revenue generated goes towards the upkeep of our existing car parks and investment into expansion of our car parking network".
So far in 2023, €17,280.00 in fines after motorists paid this figure to have their cars released.
In 2022, Kent Station in Cork had the highest number of clamping fees imposed on drivers - €59,760.00 last year, which was down significantly on previous charges which hit €116,290.00 in 2018
The next closest was Heuston Station in Dublin where drivers were hit with €38,400.00 last year in charges to have their cars released. In 2018, the figure was €77,520.00.
In contrast, Connolly Station in Dublin was much lower with just €6,480.00 in clamping charges in 2022.
The lowest fees incurred were at Bagenalstown, Waterford, Sligo and Portarlington, where motorists were hit with release charges of €120 over the year.
