Revealed: Over 650 tonnes of electrical waste collected in Carlow last year

People in Carlow recycled six-hundred-and-fifty-seven tonnes of electrical waste in 2022.

A total of 10.6kg of e-waste was recycled per person in Carlow which exceeds the national average of 10.03kg per person.

To encourage this trend, all electrical household items for waste will be accepted free of charge at upcoming events in Carlow.

Two free collection days have been organised to urge Carlow householders to bring their batteries, electrical, and electronic waste.

The first event, hosted by WEEE Ireland in partnership with Carlow County Council, starts on Saturday 16th September at The Mart, Barrack Street, Templeowen, Tullow, from 10am-4pm.

The second collection event, hosted by WEEE Ireland in partnership with Rejuice, will take place on Saturday 23rd September from 10am-4pm at Rejuice, Bagenalstown Industrial Park, Royal Oak Road, Muine Bheag, R21E297.

Household items of all sizes with a plug, battery or cable will be accepted, including old washing machines, TVs, toasters and kettles, electronic tools and toys, cables, IT equipment, mobile phones, remote controls, batteries, including farm fence batteries, and even watches.

“Shopping stats show that in Carlow, and across Ireland, we are buying more electrical goods than ever – with people purchasing an average 25kg per head in 2022 compared to 22kg in 2021,” said WEEE Ireland CEO Leo Donovan.

The free collection days may help Carlow meet national e-waste recycling targets for 2023.

Leo Donovan said “We look forward to working with Carlow householders to hopefully recycle a record-breaking amount of electronic waste in 2023.”
