Carlow and Kilkenny County Councils team up to ensure road safety for pedestrians

As part of the Active Travel scheme, Carlow County Council have teamed up with Kilkenny County Council to propose a solution for pedestrians to cross the George Semple Bridge safely.

The George Semple Bridge links Graiguenamanagh, Co. Kilkenny and Tinnahinch, Co. Carlow.

There are currently no facilities for walking/cycling on this bridge leaving those road users vulnerable to oncoming vehicles.

Assessing the current situation, the Active Travel team have produced a design solution that allows for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists to safely navigate the bridge.

The proposal includes the introduction of a footpath for pedestrians and traffic lights for vehicles.

The team believe that the proposed construction can be carried out before the end of the year, with tests commencing in the coming weeks.
