At the September council meeting held earlier this week, Carlow County Council stated that they support the reintroduction of the 9% VAT rate for food related businesses and call on the Minister for Finance to extend the 9% VAT rate to the end of 2024.

The standard VAT rate in Ireland is 23%.

13.5% is a reduced rate of VAT.

9% is a second reduced rate which was first introduced in November 2020.

It was extended to 28 February 2023 by Budget 2023 and further extended until 31 October 2023, under the cost of living supports announced in February 2023.

Local Fianna Fáil TD Fintan Phelan stated at the meeting that the standard VAT rate 'is completely unacceptable' as it damages local businesses.
