Jobs boost as Carlow Aldi store extension and revamp gets go ahead

Planning permission has been granted for a revamp and extension of ALDI's store in Tullow which will create a number of new jobs at the supermarket.

ALDI Ireland recently announced its plans to extend and fully revamp its Tullow store in a move that will create five new permanent jobs in the local area.

The news comes as the supermarket was granted final planning permission from An Bord Pleanála to extend the store by 25%.

The extended store will offer customers a larger shopping space, with floor size increasing from 907 sqm to 1147 sqm. Tullow shoppers will also benefit from two new electric vehicle charging points at the store and 10 bike parking spaces available.

Commenting on the announcement, Colin Breslin, Managing Director Buying & Services, ALDI Ireland said: "We are delighted to receive planning permission from An Bord Pleanála to extend our Tullow store to provide an even better shopping experience for customers, in addition to creating five new permanent jobs in the local community.

"We are committed to bringing market leading value and quality to customers at locations most convenient to them, and as outlined in our recently published Report ‘The Financial Impact of Ireland’s Planning System Delays on the Irish Consumer’, ALDI stores bring monthly savings of €78,333 to the communities they operate in. Our goal is to deliver this value within reach of every town, village and rural community in Ireland, and we have ambitious plans to expand our store network.”

This announcement follows the retailer’s recent commitment to a €33.6 million investment programme in four Midlands counties over the next two years. ALDI has submitted planning applications to construct four new stores across the Midlands, at Tullamore in Offaly, Moate in Westmeath, Granard in Longford and Kilcock in Kildare. If approved, the proposed stores would all open by 2025, creating 120 permanent jobs across the region, with 200 jobs supported during the construction phase.

Operating three stores in county Carlow, ALDI is deeply involved in the local community.

ALDI employs over 60 full-time staff in Carlow, spending almost €3M on wages annually. Through its partnership with FoodCloud, ALDI’s Carlow stores have donated over 58,000 meals to local charities to date. Each store is also part of ALDI’s Community Grants network, with Forward Steps based in Tullow, Make a Wish and Borris Vocational School among those to avail of the €500 bursary grant in recent times.
