Carlow County Fire and Rescue Service key tips to prevent a fire in your home this Winter

As the cold weather is upon us for the forthcoming weeks ahead, Carlow County Fire and Rescue Service has issued key tips to Carlow homeowners to prevent a fire occurring in their home.

As a high number of Carlow homeowners light their fire to heat their homes, there are key fire preventions to consider that Carlow's fire service recommend all homeowners should follow.

The fire service said that chimney fires are still a high cause of fire in homes across Ireland, and lighting a chimney fire should be met with precaution.

The top fire safety tips from Carlow County Fire and Rescue Service:
  • Have your chimneys and flues swept and kept clean
  • Use a spark guard on open fires
  • Don't dry clothes in front of fires
  • Only burn dry timber and suitable coal
  • Have a carbon monoxide alarm near fuel burning appliances
  • Ensure fire in decay or out before you go to bed and ensure spark guard in place
  • Have working smoke alarms appropriately located in your home
  • Close internal doors before you go to bed at night, have a phone with you and know your eircode
  • Have an escape plan discussed with all your family, keep escape routes clear and have keys for your final exit doors
