Carlow Fire and Rescue were called into action to help rescue a mare and her foal from a muddy river in Tankardstown, Laois on Thursday night.

The horses were spotted by a member of An Garda Síochána who immediately raised the alarm with local crews.

Athy Fire Services were joined with members of Carlow County Fire and Rescue Service, My Lovely Horse Rescue, along with volunteers and together they aided in the retrieval of the two horses.

Social media played a huge part as My Lovely Horse Rescue were able to call upon members of the public to help out with items including horse boxes, stables and vets.

Speaking on their facebook page, MLHR said that the horses are now safe and sound.
