The Remembrance Tree in Carlow Town

Thousands of loved ones were remembered over Christmas in Carlow in 2018 - which helped to raise an incredible €9,000 for local charities.

Carlow Rotary Club’s annual remembrance tree, located on Barrack Street in Carlow Town, was filled with ribbons, all bearing the names of loved ones, during Christmas 2018.

"On behalf of the Rotary Club of Carlow, I would like to thank all those who supported our remembrance tree," said its president, Cllr Fintan Phelan.

"Thousands of ribbons were placed on the remembrance tree in memory of a loved one. The remembrance tree is something very special for people; many come back every year to write their ribbon and remember a loved one," he added.

A donation of any amount can be made, with proceeds going to local charities, including County Carlow Hospice, Éist Cancer Support Services, St Vincent de Paul and Bethany House Alzheimer Society.

He added: "A huge €9,000 was raised this year and on behalf of the Rotary Club of Carlow I would like to thank the people of Carlow for their generous support of very worthwhile local causes.

"I would like to thank Rotarians, volunteers, Carlow County Council, Unum Ireland, the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow Volunteer Centre, the students and teachers of Carlow CBS and Gaelcholáiste Cheatharlach, Fr Ruairí O’Domhnaill, Rev David White, Rev Paul Maxwell, Douglas Murray, Eugene Walsh and Barry O’Neill for all of their assistance and support with the remembrance tree."

Ribbons from the remembrance tree will be blessed at 12.30pm Mass this Sunday, January 13, in Carlow Cathedral.
