Carlow motorists are urged to drive with caution as temperatures plummet and roads are gritted.

Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council, Brian O'Donoghue, said: "Priority 1 & 2 roads will be gritted Wednesday night in Carlow.

"Please proceed on Thursday morning with caution and plan ahead."

Roads treated are national primary ones like the N80 and regional roads like the R726. None of the smaller roads have been treated.

Meanwhile, Alan O'Reilly of said: "Plenty of roads below 0C Thursday morning so take it easy!

"My station is at 0.6c but feels like -4c with the wind chill so wrap up well before you head out.‬"

He added: "A nice cold bright day ahead with good sunny spells before sleet and rain arrive tonight but it could fall as snow for a little time before turning to rain.

"A little less cold Friday but cold again for the weekend and likely remaining cold next week."
