Derelict properties on Barrack Street

Calls have been for Carlow County Council to "get things moving" on a raft of local authority owned derelict houses and lands.

Cllr Fergal Browne brought up the matter at this month's meeting of Carlow Municipal District and brought a notice of motion calling for the Council to to draw up proposals for the redevelopment of houses and lands owned by the Council.

His motion made specific reference to properties on the Lower Staplestown Road/Lower Pollerton Road and Barrack Street.

Cllr Browne said the properties had been allowed to remain derelict for far too long and urged the Council to take action.

Director of Services at the Council, Bernie O'Brien, said a lot of the properties formed part of the "My Carlow" regeneration plan, which is still under review.

While Director of Services, Michael Brennan, said the Staplestown Rd would form part of the masterplan for Carlow.

Cllr Browne said that the Council's response was a "kick to touch" and said "Joe Schmidt could be giving you a ring" for the Six Nations.

The notice of motion by Cllr Browne was supported by all members.
