An unexpectedly large amount of snow accumulated in Carlow as the cold weather that collided with Storm Freya brought more snow on Sunday than was anticipated.

Heavy rain turned into extensive snow in the midlands and Carlow with at times blizzard like conditions. Snow fell late Sunday afternoon in and around Carlow Town and around the Dolmen County.

Met Éireann predicted polar weather on Saturday evening with some sleet possible. Snow was not forecasted until Sunday morning when a Status Yellow warning was issued - which lifted at 8am on Monday morning.

Residents in many parts woke up to a blanket of snow and with freezing conditions overnight - road conditions are very poor around Carlow  and its neighbouring counties.
