A Carlow councillor has highlighted a case where a "person got a Council mortgage and they are now renting it [the house] out themselves".

The matter came up at this month's full meeting of the local authority when Cllr Will Paton asked questions about whether or not successful Council mortgage applicants were allowed to rent out the properties.

He asked if there was a requirement on people "who get a mortgage to live in the house".

Director of Services, Michael Brennan, said that if applicants are given a local authority mortgage the "intention is that they would live in the house".
