A real "battleground scenario" is developing for Friday and next weekend with cold and settled weather out to the east and more unsettled but milder air out to the west and south.
Forecaster Alan O'Reilly of www.carlowweather.com said: "The question is which will win out, cool dry weekend or wet and mild?"

Met Éireann said: "Still marked uncertainty pertaining to Atlantic weather fronts and whether they will make any progress eastwards over the country.
"The current guidance suggests the southeasterly airflow will persist, keeping the frontal rain-bands largely offshore. It will be somewhat breezier or windier than of late in the west and southwest."
