Gardaí investigating several incidents of pickpocketing in Carlow Town have issued an appeal for witnesses or for anyone with information on the crimes to come forward.

The three separate incidents occurred in Carlow Town last Saturday between lunchtime and 2.30pm and all three victims were female.

The women's purses were stolen from their handbags after they were taken in what has been described as "shoulder surfing".

In the first incident, the bag was on the woman's shoulder when the purse was taken and it was later found in a nearby bin with everything in it except for the cash.

Crime Prevention Officer for Carlow/Kilkenny, Sgt Peter McConnon, advised people that when they're out and about to keep their bag secure and zipped up.

He also advised people to ensure that they keep their cash, purses or wallets either the bottom of their bags or safely secured.
