UPDATED: Turnout in Carlow hit 54% in places but 'many people stayed at home'

Voter turnout in Carlow hit 54% in Ballon but an incumbent councillor has said "many people stayed at home" with a turnout of 46% in Tullow.

The county went to the polls for the Local and European Elections and the Referendum on the Regulation of Divorce on Friday. 

Polling stations opened at 7am and closed at 10pm. 

Official turnout figures have yet to be confirmed. 

By 6pm on Friday turnout was between 27% and 28% across the county but many people would have chosen to vote after work.
