A Carlow Town Local Election candidate who ran with "no posters, no photo on the ballot paper, no canvass and no publicity" has garnered hundreds of votes.

Bernard Jennings, an optician in Carlow Town, arrived in the count centre in Askea Boys National School on Saturday dressed as a pirate.

Despite his cavalier attitude to the election, Mr Jennings had garnered 326 votes by the time he was eliminated which was more than the Sinn Féin and Labour candidates.
