As part of County Carlow's Biodiversity Action Plan 2023-2028, the restoration of Powerstown River has commenced.

Almost 1km of riverway that was before overgrown with little to no flow, has now been transformed.

The Environment Department presented their progress at the Municipal District of Muinebheag September meeting where it was met with praise by local councillors who agreed that 'small scale projects like this make a big difference.'

While over the last 20 years the numbers of Salmon in the River Barrow have decreased, they expect to see the stock flourish with the continuation of this project.

The aim for this project is to extend to other streams in Laois, Kildare, etc. in the future.
