Store owner Dermot Mulhall was pictured celebrating with staff outside the Mace store at the Borris Service Station at Factory Cross in Borris, Co. Carlow
A Carlow player had a birthday to remember after receiving the gift of four scratch cards and revealing the top prize amount of €75,000 on one of them which was a €5 All Cash Platinum.
The winning scratch card was purchased by a family member at the Mace shop at Borris Service Station at FactoryCross in Borris.
The winner was not only thrilled with the big win but also for an excuse to make the unexpected trip home:
"I have been living in Australia for a few years now and didn’t expect to be home right now so sitting here in the Winners Room feels surreal for many reasons.
"It was my birthday a few weeks ago and the card actually arrived late. I didn’t even know it was on the way so was wondering had my birthday been forgotten altogether!
"When it arrived, the card was left sitting on the table for a day or so before I even opened it. I scratched off the other cards first and there was nothing on them. I was scanning them carefully to make sure I wasn’t missing anything and then when I got to this one, I didn’t even realise the amount immediately.
"It was probably an hour before I was certain. I had to ring home immediately to tell them the good news. With the time difference, you can imagine how that phone call went! I think they thought I was delirious before they believed me.”
The top prize winner is going to enjoy the trip home before planning what to do with the windfall.
"It’s like a double win to be honest. Not only is it €75,000 which came completely out of the blue but it’s getting home to see family and enjoy a celebration together as well. The plan is to enjoy the next few weeks and then have a think of what to do next.
"I can safely say this has been my most memorable birthday ever!"
The owner of the winning Mace store where the ticket was purchased, Dermot Mulhall, who has only recently took over the running of the busy Carlow store was absolutely thrilled for his lucky customer.
"This amazing story really is the talk of the town at the moment. I have only taken over the store very recently so this win is a great introduction to the local community!
"There have been lots of celebrations in the town over the last few days and we have all spoken to the winner so there’s a great buzz around the place. We have lots of exciting plans in the works to develop the store very soon so it really is an exciting time for Borris at the moment."
