Ross O’Rourke replied 'not guilty by reason of insanity' when arraigned at the Central Criminal Court 

A jury has been empanelled to hear the trial of a 31-year-old Carlow man who has pleaded not guilty to the murder of his father by reason of insanity. 

At the Central Criminal Court this Wednesday, Ross O’Rourke, aged 31, with a previous address in Tullow, was arraigned on the single charge that, between October 24/25 2022, at The Stables, RattinKinnegad, Westmeath, he did murder Stefan Nivelles Posschier. 

The accused replied: “Not guilty by reason of insanity.”

Counsel for the Director of Public Prosecutions is Shane Costello SC, with Michael Bowman SC counsel for the defence. 

Ms Justice Caroline Biggs told the jury that they would be hearing evidence from Dr Ronan Mullaney for the defence and Dr Anthony Kearns for the prosecution. 

The trial, which is expected to last up to four days, will commence on Thursday before Mr Justice Paul McDermott and the jury of five men and seven women.
