A number of streetlights that were installed in Carlow town two years ago still haven’t been turned on, a council meeting has heard.

The issue was raised by Fianna Fáil councillor Fintan Phelan at the March plenary meeting of Carlow County Council.

Cllr Phelan said: “I have consistently raised this here at both this council and at the MD as well in relation to the lights at Burrin Manor, all along the front of Burrin Manor.

“You know we installed lights there. There were no lights there, the lights were installed but they haven’t been connected.

“Has there been any update from the ESB in relation to it? I think it’s a matter of urgency now and I hope we’re keeping the pressure on but I’d welcome any update in relation to that.”

Independent Ireland councillor John Cassin also enquired about the status of the lights.

Cllr Cassin said: “The lights have been there, I think it’s been two years if memory serves me.

“I know we’re saying that the ESB is the problem but there can’t be that much of a problem to get the lights turned on. That is, at this stage, absolutely outrageous.

“The community centre is probably not a million miles away from being finished. There’ll be a lot of movement and traffic going in and out so I think a huge amount of pressure needs to go onto the ESB at this stage.”

In response to the two councillors, Coilín O'Reilly, Chief Executive of Carlow County Council, provided an update on the lights.

Mr O’Reilly said: “The piece of paper in front of me says there was a meeting last week and they will be installed this week, so we’ll see.

“Our experience to date hasn’t been great but seemingly there was a very positive engagement with the ESB last week and the individual that we met was very good and very helpful.

“It should be sorted this week, so let’s hope,” he added.
