People of "good character" are being encouraged to apply to become a retained firefighter for Carlow's Fire and Rescue Service.

The Service is currently recruiting to form a panel for future vacancies at its Carlow Town Fire Station.

It is a part-time role and three courses, including Firefighting Skills and Breathing Apparatus, must be completed.

There will be a total of six weeks of training, split into varying blocks.

To apply, you must be over 18 years old and be considered medically and physically fit for the job.

You also must hold a clean, Class B driving license and will be required to obtain a Class C license within 12 months of being accepted into the service.

A firefighter must live and work within a reasonable distance of the Fire Station to allow them to quickly respond to any calls or emergencies.

Retained firefighters can earn up to almost €17,000 in their first year of work, with an hourly rate of €51.56 for attending fire practices and drills.

Before being accepted, firefighters must pass medical, physical, and other examinations, which may include cardiovascular assessment tests.

Applications must be sent to the Fire Service by 12pm on Friday, March 27th.
