A group of students from St Leo's College in Carlow titled 'Phone Phobia' sparked an interesting debate about phone use amongst Carlow Councillors

Students from local County Carlow school, St Leo's College, were present at the most recent April meeting of the Carlow County Council.

They presented to the Councillors their YSI (Young Social Innovators) project titled 'Phone Phobia' which sparked an interesting debate amongst the Councillors.

The project was talking about the issues and dangers of young people excessively using their mobile phones and social media leaving Councillors very impressed.

Cllr Dalton remarked that the project was "very important" and was even interested in "sharing(the presentation) with my kids."

Cllr Dalton also brought up the Australian legislation that looks to ban social media use for children under the age of 16 saying "we should look into something similar here."

Councillor Brian O’Donoghue also added that "It's not just young people stuck in their phones, especially some of my colleagues."

Cllr O'Donoghue then listed a number of apps on his phone and said that "Everything guides you back to some social media" and the presentation by the girls from St Leos took "real courage."

Cllr Daniel Pender also added that its a "very important issue" that affects "my generation, my parents, and my grandparents" and it all "feeds into the mental health issue."
