A MULTI-agency operation is continuing off the Wexford coast after a trawler which is suspected to have tens of millions of euro worth of cocaine on board ran aground.
The men were detained shortly after they were airlifted from the vessel after it got into difficulty on Sunday night. They are being questioned at a garda station in Wexford and can, subject to court orders, be held for up to seven days.
According to multiple reports, it is believed that cocaine worth up to €140 million was being transported on the boat before it became stuck on a sandbank around 12km north of Rosslare.
A major operation involving gardai, the naval service, Revenue and Customs and the Coast Guard is continuing but it has been hampered by poor weather conditions.
The LE William Butler Yeats is monitoring the trawler and the area around it while the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau has been alerted.
Further updates are expected across the day.
