'For pity's sake neuter your cats' - Severely malnourished kitten rescued from rubbish dump

A severely malnourished kitten has been found abandoned in a dump in Co Offaly.

Offaly SPCA highlighted the incident on their official Facebook page on Saturday (January 20), where they posted a picture of the kitten and called for people to neuter their cats "for pity's sake".

The kitten was reportedly saved by two young men.

In the statement, an Offaly SPCA spokesperson wrote: "This is what happens to unwanted kittens... This is the very distressing reality. We know it's very upsetting to look at. It's even more upsetting to deal with and we are very upset.

"But how shockingly upsetting it is for this poor kitten. For pity's sake, neuter [your] cats to stop this terrible suffering."

In a later update, the animal rescue confirmed the kitten - who weighs the same as a 5-6 week old kitten but is more likely about 10 weeks - has "suffered terribly from hunger, thirst, severe cold and fear".

They also confirmed the kitten - who has conjunctivitis - is severely malnourished and dehydrated, and tame but very upset and stressed.

In a statement, they said: "Where are its mother and siblings? Was it dumped there or accidentally ended up in a bin on the way to the dump? Who knows? Who cares?

"While the first instinctive reaction is shock, anger and horror, let’s not overlook the fact that two young men took the trouble to help this tiny, helpless little scrap. These two young men showed their true colours and their compassion by reaching out for help for this kitten and in doing so saved itss life.

"Why? Because the life of this kitten is important and matters. Thank you both."
