Garda presence at Cork Airport amid female genital mutilation awareness campaign

Gardaí are conducting an Operation Limelight event at Cork Airport on Saturday to raise awareness about the risks and laws around female genital mutilation.

This is a multi-agency operation organised by the National Child Protection Unit at the Garda National Protective Services Bureau, aimed at raising awareness about the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Ireland, the law around it and the very serious risks to the long-term health of women and girls subjected to it.

The agencies involved on the day include An Garda Síochána and AkiDwa, who provide accompaniment services.

The Operation is also supported by the Department of Justice and Tusla. Garda members from Garda National Protective Services Bureau and the Cork Garda Divisions will be involved.

The operation coincides with the start of the Easter Holiday period where high passenger numbers are expected. The members will also engage with the Airport and Airline Staff.
