Road traffic collisions over the Easter bank holiday weekend are most likely to occur between the afternoon and evening, according to An Garda Síochána.
A warning issued by Gardaí this morning (March 29) revealed the risk of a fatal or serious injury collision is highest between 3pm and 6pm during the Easter weekend, with the highest risk day being Saturday.
It comes amid an ongoing Bank Holiday road enforcement operation, which began at 7am yesterday (Thursday March 28) and continues until 7am on Tuesday (April 2).
The operation aims to protect vulnerable road users and reduce fatal and serious collisions through high-visibility roads policing and enforcement.
It is focusing on the dangers of intoxicated driving, speeding, mobile phone use, distracted driving, and seatbelt offences, as well as increasing drivers’ awareness of the dangers of driving on mornings following nights out.
Motorists are warned there is "a strong possibility" of being stopped and tested for alcohol and/or drugs over the coming days.
Fifty five people have lost their lives in collisions on Irish roads so far this year, with Gardaí warning the Easter weekend is a period where the risk of collisions is high.
