President Higgins officially accepts resignation of Leo Varadkar as Taoiseach

It comes weeks after the Dublin politician unexpectedly announced his resignation as Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader

President Michael D. Higgins has officially accepted the resignation of Leo Varadkar as Taoiseach.

The former Taoiseach - who is still TD for Dublin West - arrived at Áras an Uachtaráin today (April 8) where the president accepted his formal resignation and thanked him for his service in office.

Varadkar, who has been Taoiseach for approximately four years, unexpectedly resigned his position as chief of government and Fine Gael leader on March 20.

His official resignation today comes hours after he completed his last official political engagement as Taoiseach at the North South Ministerial Council in Co Armagh.

He will remain in the role in a caretaker capacity until his successor is voted in.

Fine Gael's new leader, Simon Harris, is expected to be appointed the next Taoiseach, making him the youngest chief in Ireland's history.

A Fine Gael spokesperson published a photo of Leo Varadkar on X this evening with the text 'Thank you, Leo Varadkar' as its caption.
