The huge stash of illegal cigarettes and tobacco seized in Donegal
Over €240,000 worth of illegal cigarettes and tobacco have been seized in Donegal.
Officers from the Revenue were aided by detectives from the Donegal Division of An Garda Síochána in the operation on Wednesday
Officers seized over 240,000 cigarettes, 52 kgs of ‘roll your own tobacco’. A vehicle was also seized as part of the intelligence-led operation.
The illicit cigarettes, branded ‘Sobranie’, and tobacco, branded ‘Golden Virginia’, have a combined estimated value of over €244,000, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €191,000.
Two men have been questioned and investigations are ongoing.
A Revenue spokesperson said: “This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply of illegal tobacco products.
“If businesses, or members of the public, have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on 1800 295 295.”
