Physical driver's licences could soon be a thing of the past as new digital licences are now on the way.

As reported by the Irish Independent, the Government has been trialling the new digital system since the beginning of the year and it could be a major advantage for motorists all over the country.

The new digital licence can be kept in the wallet app on your smartphone which will have a built-in electronic signature, without the need of having to carry around your licence with you for fear it could become lost or stolen.

Of course, the digital licence is not mandatory once it will become available and motorists can still opt to use the physical card if they wish.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Junior Minister for e-Government Ossian Smyth said,

"This major innovation of digital driving licences will allow people to leave their driving licence safely at home and show the digital licence on their phone if asked.

"The app has been tested in a pilot programme with civil servants since the start of the year, and I look forward to it being available to everyone later this year."
