Pit bull terrier shot dead after attacking man and woman at house in Cork

A pit bull terrier was shot and killed by gardai after it attacked a man and woman at a house in Cork.

Gardai and the Armed Response Unit were called to a house in Ballyphehane in the city at around 5.20pm following reports of a pit-bull terrier attacking residents.

A man and woman injured by the dog were transported to Cork University Hospital for medical assessment and treatment.

Gardai said they engaged with the owner of the dog, and after failed attempts to sedate the animal, it was shot by the Armed Response Unit and euthanised by the vet.

It is the second incident this week in which a dog was shot after attacking someone.

Nicole Morey died on Tuesday after she was attacked by her dog at her home in Limerick, hours after celebrating her 23rd birthday.

Emergency services and the regional Armed Support Unit attended a house in Ballyneety, Co Limerick, at around 11.40pm.

The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene but succumbed to her injuries. Her body was taken to University Hospital Limerick for a post-mortem examination.
